"My Hair Isn't Growing!"

This is a cry our stylists hear so often. Is it possible that hair literally stops growing? If you colour your hair, a quick look at the roots will tell you if hair is growing or not. If you have roots it is growing. If the hair has stopped growing there will be a problem with the growth cycle which will result in hair loss.

Rule out hair loss - Look for these signs; bald patches which can be a form of Alopecia, or thinning all over the head which is most likely a health or diet issue – in either of these cases we would advise a visit to the Doctor.

HAIR GROWTH CYCLE - Individual hairs are at one of these three stages;

Anagen The growing phase of the hair, at this stage the hair relies on nutrients from the blood supply at the dermal papilla. This is the longest phase of the hair cycle and can last 5/6 years. Catagen The resting stage of the hair which typically lasts around 2 to 4 weeks. During this phase the hair is slowly detaching from the hair bulb. Telogen The falling phase of the hair growth cycle. We typically lose 80-100 hairs a day. As the hair is moving out of the hair shaft the follicle prepares to make a new hair in the Anagen phase.

How many hairs on my head? Each person has approx 100,000 hairs with blondes having most and red heads the least. Mechanical damage - If the hair is growing normally at the roots but not in length, the cause could be over use of heat appliances or the ends of the hair brittle causing breakage. A haircut to increase tensile strength and twice weekly deep conditioning masks will help.

Home maintenance - You can expect professional advice and recommendation from your Feathers stylist– our stylists are educated on all products we stock and will advise you accordingly.
